County Executive commemorates birthday of great American

Randallstown, MD - On Friday, January 15, at 11 a.m., Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during a ceremony to be held at the Colonial Baptist Church, 9411 Liberty Road in Randallstown. During the commemorative observance, Smith will announce the four Content of Character honorees as designated by the County's Office of Fair Practices and Community Affairs. "This award honors Baltimore County residents who strive to model exemplary character as described in Dr. Martin Luther King's 'I Have A Dream' speech and who have made significant contributions to their communities," said Delegate Adrienne Jones, speaker pro tem and director of the office. In its fifth year of presentations, the 2010 Content of Character winners are:  Towson resident Heather Harvison, executive director of My Sister's Circle, Inc.; Woodlawn community advocate Aaron J. Barnett; and students Shakera Kyle from New Town High School and Austin MacMillian from Chapel Hill Elementary in Perry Hall.

The event will feature music by the New Town High School Honors Chorale under the direction of D'Artangan Evans and a solo selection by Jacqueline Anderson from Colonial Baptist Church.

The Church's Christian Academy will perform a skit honoring Dr. King, and Rev. Robert Anderson, pastor of Colonial Baptist, will show a special video presentation entitled "Believe in the Dream."

Elected officials, School Superintendent Dr. Joe Hairston, school administrators and principals, County supervisors, community advocates, area church congregations, and members of area senior centers will attend Friday's ceremony. The event is open to the public and admission is free.
